Candidates for next dictators and the surrogate of editorial board were also present as the observers.<\/p>\n<p>The important subjects of the Meeting were as follows: the summary of the activity in 2004, the plan for the activity in 2oo5, the statement of accounts in 2oo4, and the budget for 2005.\u00a0 (The summary and the budget are inserted into the issue of April\u00a0 and the statement of accounts will be inserted into the issue of May.)<\/p>\n<p>The International Conference in 2004 succeeded and a lot of people came to be interested in Alzheimer thanks to the activity of Alzheimer sufferers themselves and their families.\u00a0\u00a0 Based on the encouragement among the families and Alzheimer sufferers themselves, this problem will be more deeply understood in the society.<\/p>\n<p>At the meeting, the following subjects were discussed:<\/p>\n<p>(1)\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 What society can we live in safely even if we suffer from Alzheimer?<\/p>\n<p>(2)\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 What activity should we \u201cFamily groups\u201d do?<\/p>\n<p>(3)\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 What kind of organization should we make?<\/p>\n<p>We discussed these visions towards 2015 and also discussed the name of the organization in order to fit the tide. (Concerning the name of the organization, a journalist of Asahi Newspaper who read Mr. Takami\u2019s message in the issue of this March interviewed and the content of the interview was reported in that newspaper of 21<sup>st<\/sup> in April.)<\/p>\n<p>The followings were discussed and also decided by the new establishment of the directors.<\/p>\n<p>(1)\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 We will have two Vice-Presidents.<\/p>\n<p>(2)\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 We will have permanent directors.<\/p>\n<p>(3)\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 We will have a technical\u00a0 meeting of long-term care insurance, social indemnification, human rights, bulletin, enlightenment, investigation.<\/p>\n<p>(4)\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 We will have a special committee of future vision, dementia of early onset, and international exchange.<\/p>\n<p>(5)\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 The arrangement of directors.<\/p>\n<p>In addition, it was reported that 21<sup>st<\/sup> research assembly was held in Gunma prefecture in November.\u00a0 There the 25<sup>th<\/sup> commemorative project was practiced and how the donation for\u00a0\u00a0 Niigata-Chuetsu Earthquake was distributed<\/p>\n<p>As for Dr. Miyake, he would like to resign for personal reasons and it was approved at the Board of Directors.\u00a0 He is a member of the founders of \u201cFamily groups.\u201d\u00a0 He had been the chief of the secretariat and also had been the chief of the editing committee for a long time.\u00a0 Moreover, at the International Conference of last year, he worked as the chief of the project and administration. So we will have no Vice-president till next General Meeting.<\/p>\n<p>It was decided that we should start the foundation(1,000) for the international exchange.<\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Letters from Association members <\/span><\/strong><strong>( Feature article: Group homes)<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>(1)\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 My mother could enter the near group home.<\/p>\n<p>(Mrs. O.,61 years old, female, Hyogo prefecture)<\/p>\n<p>A new group home was established near hour house. As it takes only 5~6 minutes, we can visit her almost every day. The sufferer got calm after she entered this home.\u00a0 As for\u00a0 me, I can live a peaceful life, without worrying about the schedule of the short stay and about the hour of coming home.<\/p>\n<p>If I desire more, I would like the staffs of the group home to take her to the toilet a little more frequently.\u00a0 I also would like them not to make her stay sitting but to move about.\u00a0 Moreover, I would like them to let her work.\u00a0 I hope that she will stay here as long as possible.<\/p>\n<p>(2)\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Quality is more important than quality.<\/p>\n<p>(Mrs. F., 48 years old, female Ibaragi prefecture)<\/p>\n<p>It is two years since I asked a group home for the care of my mother-in-law.\u00a0 There seems to be many kinds of group homes.\u00a0 The most important thing is the quality of staffs.<\/p>\n<p>(3)\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 I\u2019m relieved to see my wife\u2019s smile.<\/p>\n<p>(Mr. K., 69 years old, male, Saitama prefecture)<\/p>\n<p>Four years have passed since I began to care my wife(70 years old) who is an Alzheimer\u2019s sufferer.\u00a0 My mind has been getting easy mentally and physically encouraged by members of the Saitama branch, the people of the neighborhood, my son, my daughter.\u00a0 My wife\u2019s illness is going worse and worse day by day.\u00a0 I am relieved by the staffs\u2019 effort to care her and the smile of my wife.\u00a0 I go to see her almost every day.<\/p>\n<p>(4)\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 The education of staff is necessary.<\/p>\n<p>(Mr. F., 74 years old , male, Chiba prefecture)<\/p>\n<p>It is necessary to be strict with the qualification of the staffs of grope homes.\u00a0 In the group homes, there are many \u201ctransferred staffs.\u201d\u00a0 The establishment group homes are extremely increasing. It seems that they don\u2019t have enough\u00a0 love for the sufferers.\u00a0 Do you think this is too much demand?<\/p>\n<p>(5)\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Should my mother enter the froup home or not?<\/p>\n<p>(Mr.I., 55 years old, male, Aichi prefecture)<\/p>\n<p>My wife and I are caring her mother who is suffering From Alzheimer and<\/p>\n<p>needing care of needing level 5. At present we are making use of day care 22 times a week. I sometimes speak to her in a violent language, getting angry with her.\u00a0 In addition, my wife is also bad mentally.\u00a0 I dared to apply for a group home, and in the near future, we are going to talk about it.\u00a0 I\u2019m worried every day because I feel that I have given up the care of my mother and have kicked her out.<\/p>\n<p>As I am a salaried man, my wife has to chiefly care her, including incontinence.<\/p>\n<p>I thank her very much.\u00a0 On the other side, I feel sense of sin towards<\/p>\n<p>my-mother-in-law.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The Psychology of Alzheimer\u2019s Sufferers <\/strong><\/p>\n<p>(by Dr. Hisao Osada, graduate school professor of Oobirin old-age major)<\/p>\n<p>Dr.Osada\u2019s Profile:Health-Leading Clinical Psychologist\/Born in 1951 in Tokyo<\/p>\n<p>Graduated from Waseda Graduate School\/A Director of the Board of Caring Dementia Sufferers\/Chairman of the Symposium \u201cFamily Caregivers\u201d of the Alzheimer\u2019s Disease International Kyoto 2004\/A Lecturer of the training course of telephone consultation\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 (Confer Pore-pore No.297)<\/p>\n<p>It is a matter of course to understand the psychology of Alzheimer sufferers<\/p>\n<p>whom we have come in contact with.\u00a0 I would like to write in three series under the<\/p>\n<p>title of \u201cThe Psychology of Alzheimer sufferers.\u201d\u00a0 As this is the first time, I would<\/p>\n<p>like to introduce the basic matters when we try to understand the psychology of the<\/p>\n<p>sufferers.<\/p>\n<p>There are two aspects to understand them.\u00a0 One is\u00a0 objectively to know their characteristics.\u00a0 For example, his age, his height and so on.\u00a0 We also have to know the condition of their family.\u00a0 In this approach the followings are included.<\/p>\n<p>(1)\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 What is the function of memory?<\/p>\n<p>(2)\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 What disorder is in the brain?<\/p>\n<p>(3)\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 How is the state of nutrition?<\/p>\n<p>(4)\u00a0\u00a0 Is there any physical disease?<\/p>\n<p>The other approach is to take the feelings of the sufferers\u2019 as they are.\u00a0 It is<\/p>\n<p>necessary to think about the following subjective and inner state of the sufferers:<\/p>\n<p>(1)\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Is the sufferer delighted or grieved?<\/p>\n<p>(2)\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 What thought or hope does he have?<\/p>\n<p>Let me show you one of the examples which a doctor told. Please imagine this<\/p>\n<p>scene.\u00a0 At night, a sufferer who has been sleeping in his bed wakes up and feels scared.\u00a0 So he wakes up the family members making loud noise.\u00a0 The family members may not understand his feeling.\u00a0 If we find the symptom of not knowing where he is, we have to notice he is near to Alzheimer.\u00a0 It seems\u00a0 that anyone will feel scared and lonely in the dark room.<\/p>\n<p>In this way, if we know that Alzheimer\u2019s sufferers have\u00a0 irrelevant disorder of the place, and if we sympathize with them, we may understand their feelings.\u00a0 This is the first step to know the sufferers\u2019 characteristics and their inner world.<\/p>\n<p>( continued )<\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Catch My Heart <\/span>(This is the page of the message from Alzheimer sufferers.)<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>New Series \u20131<\/p>\n<p>Mr. Shunji Ochi, Mr. Terumichi Matsumoto, Mrs. Christine Bryden spoke about their feelings at the Conference.\u00a0 As they wrote books and appeared on TV, we came to know more about their feelings than before. We were very much moved, and at the same time, reflected that we had had the feeling of discrimination in our heart.\u00a0 Mr. Matsumoto appealed in his speech, \u201cCertainly I have disease in my head, but my body is all right.\u00a0 I can carry heavy baggage.\u00a0 I would like to be of help to others.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>What can we do for them to be comfortable?\u00a0 What situation should we make for them to be able to show their strength?\u00a0 They appeals as follow:<\/p>\n<p>(1)\u00a0 I have nothing in my head.\u00a0 I have forgotten everything.\u00a0 I cannot think of anything.<\/p>\n<p>(2)\u00a0\u00a0 I cannot think of anything.\u00a0 I do not know what to do.\u00a0 I feel I am going far way.<\/p>\n<p>(3)\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 I feel woeful.\u00a0 I am sorry for everything.\u00a0 I want to die.<\/p>\n<p>(4)\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 I think I am a child.\u00a0 I weep every night when I get in the bed.\u00a0 While I am weeping, I get to sleep.<\/p>\n<p>(5)\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 I am doing something for others, so I should not be scolded.\u00a0 I am a fool .It is better I don\u2019t exist.<\/p>\n<p>(This is a report of \u201cFamily groups\u201d)<\/p>\n<h2>The Start of Hidamari(Sitting in the sun)Meeting<\/h2>\n<p>Hiroshima branch&#8212;The caregivers\u2019 meeting of dementia of early onset<\/p>\n<p>On a \u201cconsulting day,\u201d Mr. M. (a caregiver) came with his wife. As soon as they arrived he said, \u201cDr. N. at S. hospital in Tokyo appeared on TV said that some sufferers can recover from serenity.\u201d\u00a0 According to Mr. M, he had taken his wife to a\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 hospital where she stayed for forty days for examination and care.\u00a0 In spite of this, she did not recover.\u00a0 I was listening to his appeal for about one hour.\u00a0 He talked about her violence and the confusion in his family.\u00a0 His wife was elegant and her smiling face was beautiful.\u00a0 Her condition, however, got worse and worse, and they could not converse with each other.\u00a0 She may have been\u00a0 understood the situation.\u00a0 For she seemed to know her husband\u2019 anxiety, her own hard life, and her apology for her husband.\u00a0 She even shed tears.\u00a0 When her husband said, \u201cAre you crying?\u201d, she said, \u201cI am suffering from serenity, but my heart is alive.\u201d\u00a0 She was expressing her feeling with her whole body.\u00a0 To see this scene, I was very much moved.<\/p>\n<p>In Hiroshima branch, we have been listening to the male care givers of dementia of early onset since four years ago.\u00a0 We, however, have done nothing.\u00a0 Now we have met a couple of sufferers of dementia of early onset and their various appeals are the signals to \u201cFamily groups.\u201d\u00a0 As the result, we knew the necessity of \u201cThe meeting of Alzheimers\u2019 sufferers and care givers.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>We had the regular meeting of December two years ago,\u00a0\u00a0 where we invited Mr. M. There were participants of four male care givers and two sufferers.\u00a0 Listening to these care givers, I would like them to rest a while.
